This is the project that has taken a few weeks of my life to complete, and is ready to be delivered. The project was to match an existing wall unit. The carcass of the unit is made from red oak veneer core plywood, and has a solid wood face-frame. The portion of wood that appears natural color is a custom color match to an existing wall unit which had some sun damage. The red oak that I bought was already darker than the existing unit, so the wood needed to be chemically bleached to lighten the wood. I mixed the color stain to client specifications (I knew eventually all of the scientific training I have would pay off), and applied to the wood. The existing unit had some black in the top of the unit, so a portion of the face frame and knobs were painted the same color. There are 8 drawers w/ half-blind dovetails which are made with the dimensions to fit DVD's in them. The top of the unit has an area for a DVD player and cable TV box. There is a slot in the back of the shelf so that the cords can be hidden. The top coat is two coats of 2 lb cut shellac, 3 coats of water base polyurethane and 3 coats of hand-buffed wax.
