CJWA 2007 Woodworking Contest Rules – Published October 2007 

1. Only 2007 paid members of the CJWA are eligible for entry into the contest. The entry fee for each participant is $10 and provides the participant the right to enter their project(s) into the CJWA 2007 Woodworking Contest. The participant is governed by the rules stated in this document.  Failure to comply with the stated rules may result in the disqualification of the participant at the discretion of the CJWA.

2. The CJWA assumes no responsibility for injuries, which occur to participants in the creation or transport of the participant's project(s). Other than the allotment of solid wood material, no further material is provided by the CJWA in the fabrication of the project(s). The use of tools, workshop equipment, finishing equipment, adhesives, finishes and hardware, which may be used in the fabrication of the project(s), is the sole responsibility of the participant. Fabrication of the project(s) is to be performed on the participant's property and shall not take place at the site of CJWA meeting locations.

3. The entry fee entitles the participant an allotment of solid wood to be used for the fabrication of project(s) associated with the CJWA 2007 Woodworking Contest.

4. The types of wood in each allotment may consist of various species to be determined at the time of entry.  Each participant's total allotment of solid wood will be about the same measured in board feet. The percentage of each species in the allotment will be about the same for each participant. 

5. Once the initial allotment is received, there are to be no further additions or exchanges to the initial allotment. Wood allotments received with defects such as bow, twist, cup, end checks, cracks, variations in moisture content, and variations of color are the responsibility of the participant to work around. 

6. Each participant is allowed the freedom to create whatever project or projects they want using only the solid wood material received from the allotment with the only exceptions described in rules 7 thru 11.

7. Use of other solid wood: Only the solid wood material in the participant's allotment may be used in the creation of project(s) with the following exceptions stated in a. thru i.

a.       beech or other types of biscuits for biscuit joinery

b.       dowels for dowel joints

c.       wooden screws when used with threaded wooden holes

d.       solid wood splines for spline joints

e.       solid wood plugs for covering screw heads of metal or wood

f.         solid wood material for floating tenons

g.       wedges for wedged thru mortise and tenon joints

h.       pegs for pegged mortise and tenon joints

i.         solid wood plugs for covering metal or wood screws

With the exception of items G, H, & I, above, the solid wood material used for fastening pieces of the allotment material must be hidden from view. No other wood products including plywood or wood composite materials, such as MDF, are allowed.   

8. Participants may use other mixed media materials for ornamentation as long as they are not solid wood stated in  Such mixed media material may include, but is not limited to:

a.      Metal

b.      Plastic

c.      Stone or concrete

d.      Glass 

e.      Organic material such as leaves,

                                                               i.      shells, leather or other animal

                                                             ii.      skins, bone, or nut

f.        Paper

 

9. The participant has the freedom to choose whatever finish materials they deem appropriate to the project(s). 

10. The participant has the freedom to choose whatever adhesive materials they deem appropriate to the project(s) 

11. The participant has the freedom to choose whatever hardware materials they deem appropriate to the project(s) design.  For purposes of the contest, hardware may include: hinges, door or drawer handles, drawer slides, knobs, locks, escuteuons, keys, catches, wheels, magnets and others along with the screws or other fasteners associated with such hardware. 

12. If the participant wishes their project(s) to be judged, they will be required to present the project(s) in person at a time, date and location to be announced by the CJWA. The judging is expected at our March 12th, 2008 meeting. 

13. Participants will be responsible for all costs associated with the transport to and removal of their project(s) from the judging location. 

14. Participant’s project(s) will be judged in categories including: 

a.       Best in show

b.       First runner up

c.       Second runner up 

One of the items in CJWA’s charter requires teaching our members the highest standards of craftsmanship. The contest should be a learning vehicle for that goal. We think a person or group of respected judge(s), without entries in the contest would be better in both selecting winners and providing valuable feedback to our members.  Judging will be as determined by the CJWA. 

In addition to the above, non-cash awards, in the form of certificates of recognition may be awarded by a subjective member voting process, to participants in categories to be defined by the CJWA, which may include:

            Best Finish

            Best Joinery

            Best Carving/sculpture

            Best Turned piece

            Most Useful/practical design

            Most Clever/unique creation

            Best Toy/Model

            Best Marquetry / fretwork / intarsia or other decorative woodwork 

15. Participants can win certificates of recognition in more than one category. 

16. Prize money will be allotted for winning entries as determined by the CJWA:

            a. Best in show:                        5/8 the prize money

b. First runner-up:            2/8                               

c. Second runner-up:        1/8             

17. Everyone will receive a certificate of for his or her participation in our second CJWA  Woodworking Contest. 

18. Participants will be invited to display their project(s) and optionally place up for sale at the CJWA 2008 Woodworking show. The exact time, date and location are to be determined by the CJWA
